Aaaaand, I'm off!

well, i'm finally ready to leave!!! it's been a whirlwhind of travel lately -- home, DC, durham, palo alto -- and i'm looking forward to living in one place, not out of a suitcase.

in case you're confused about why i'm leaving, the brief synopsis is that i will be doing women's health research in Moshi, Tanzania, at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC), for a whole year, thanks to the NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars program. i feel incredibly lucky to be going -- after being inspired by all the amazing US and international fellows and scholars, i totally have to make good on this opportunity. although i was a little nervous about this year, my NIH and Duke training have made me so excited to start my career in global health. there are so many compelling research questions to work on in the developing world, and i really feel like this is the beginning of a completely new trajectory for me. hopefully i come back with a much better perspective on the world.

on a lighter note, i'm posting some pics of all the fun we had at NIH training (we learned something, too, but sometimes i wasn't always 100% paying attention, right manik? ;))

so, i'm not really sure what i plan on using this blog for. it seems strange to write what i'm thinking to the internet blogosphere rather than just tell you, but i'll give it a shot. seems like the appropriate thing to do when you're moving to africa for a whole year!! and at the very least, it will be cool to read the chronicle of my experience 10 years from now and see all my pictures. so with that, i leave san francisco in exactly 12 hours... goodbye america, hello tanzania! :)
